When I first started researching the best collagen facial cream, I was shocked to discover that the best lotions don’t even have collagen in them! In fact, there are far better ways to reduce wrinkles and sagging than paying heaps for a cream that claims to contain this protein.
1. What is collagen?
Collagen, along with elastin, is a vitally important protein that keeps your skin taut, supple and smooth. But as we age, the fibers in both proteins start to break down, causing sagging, lines and wrinkles.
The main culprits in this process are free radicals. These are molecules that have lost an electron through interaction with other molecules, damaging cells as they do so.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could reverse skin aging instantly? No surgery, no lotions, no pills – all wrinkles, lines and sagging gone in an instant! Impossible? For now, I’m afraid it is. But don’t despair, because there are things you can do to restore your complexion – even if it does take a little time and patience.
Some of what I’m about to tell you will sound a little boring: eat properly, don’t stay in the sun, don’t smoke and so on.
But to reverse skin aging it’s often these simple home truths that make all the difference. If you give your skin a good chance of being able to repair itself, any other aging skin treatment you try, such as using high quality moisturizers, will be all the more effective.
Why is eating properly so important to reverse skin aging? You are what you eat, as the old saying goes, and what you eat will show up in your complexion sooner or later. Just like bones and organs, our skin thrives on good quality nutrients. We can get away with a certain amount of junk food and a low-nutrient diet while young but, by the time we hit our thirties, the damage begins to show.
In particular, our skin needs a good supply of antioxidants. Antioxidants mop up the damage caused by free radicals (molecules that have lost an electron through interaction with other molecules). Free radicals damage cells and it’s an ongoing process. Antioxidants work to repair the damage so you need as many of these as you can in your diet.

Sunbaking, on the other hand, allows too many ultraviolet rays to penetrate the layers, damaging cells as they go. Over the years, wrinkles, lines and sunspots appear so to reverse skin aging, it’s essential to limit your sun exposure.
Pollutants and toxins too play a part in skin aging. Smoking is well known as a factor in increasing wrinkles and lines as it breaks down the collagen and elastin. But general pollutants, such as car or factory emissions, also damage cells and lead to visible signs of aging.
Of course, it’s impossible to avoid all the natural processes of external aging and we wear on our faces the signs of the life we have led and the stamp of our own personalities. But we can limit, and even repair, the signs of damage.
Once we’ve taken care of our diet, limited our time in the sun and reduced our exposure to pollutants as much as possible, it’s time to look at what we can do externally to reverse skin aging.
It’s absolutely essential to use a good quality moisturizer on your face if you want to protect your complexion from further damage. A high quality product can even repair much of the damage that has already occurred.
A good moisturizer will be paraben-free (parabens may cause cancers) and fragrance-free (fragrances can cause irritation and rashes in many people). It should contain ingredients that are in a concentrated form and that are natural and not synthetic.
You can find products nowadays that contain special substances that can help your skin to regenerate its own collagen and elastin to reverse skin aging. The top products will also have ingredients such as sea kelp to reduce wrinkles, active manuka honey to soothe and repair damaged skin, and antioxidants that can penetrate layers to repair cells.
In conclusion, there’s no quick fix to reverse skin aging. Just as the damage builds up gradually, so does any good aging skin treatment take a little time to show results. But you can take some simple steps yourself to repair lines and wrinkles and limit any further damage.

f you are like me you are sick and tired of using aging skin moisturizers that feel like thick grease. Often marketed as being for ‘mature’ complexions, they leave your skin feeling oily and clogged with goo! And the more you pay, the more you’re left feeling robbed. So I went looking for quality anti-aging facial creams that don’t cost the earth – and was pleasantly surprised.
You can generally get both day creams and nightcreams in any one product range. An anti-wrinkle nightcream is a good idea because it should be designed to nourish and protect while your skin is at rest overnight.
Any decent aging skin moisturizers should focus on the three main causes of wrinkles, lines and sagging:
- the breakdown of collagen and elastin (the proteins that hold cells together)
- the breakdown of cell structure, and
- free radicals, which damage cells.
This sounds complicated but it is possible to find cosmetic manufacturers who are able to tackle all these problems.
Ideally, you’ll also want a product that doesn’t use chemicals and possibly harmful ingredients.
Collagen and elastin
Don’t be fooled by products that claim to actually contain collagen and elastin. The molecules in these proteins are far too large to pass through the skin and will do no good at all.
