Cardiovascular Risk Factors – 5 Hot Tips on Beating the Odds

The average American is very passive when it comes to dealing with cardiovascular diseases. What most people do not realize is that the absence of symptoms not related to the presence of health. In the course of practice in healthcare for 16 years, I have thousands of patients, some of which are life-threatening cardiovascular problems.

The patients with mild to advanced cardiovascular disease were often too passive about it the right steps to prevent and reverse the problem. This attitude came from the impression that there were no symptoms. This can be a deadly mistake. By the time symptoms (eg pain, shortness of breath, etc.), a patient may be teetering on the brink of a possible crisis.

It is imperative for all to know the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Then, take steps to avoid them. Some risk factors can be changed, others can not.

Here are the critical risk factors and 5 tips to overcome them:

The risk factors that can not be changed are: increasing age, sex (men have a higher risk of heart attack than women), and inheritance (including race).

The risk factors that can be changed are: smoking (smokers are 2-4 times more likely to develop heart disease than non-smokers), high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes, response to stress and excessive drinking of alcohol consumption.

1st Be active – Whether you have symptoms or not, a complete physical and have your doctor for a lipid panel for you. This panel is your triglycerides, lipoprotein levels, and total cholesterol. I have many patients who are otherwise healthy in appearance, the dangerously high levels on this panel. Another good test to work with this panel, C-reactive protein. This test checks whether an inflammatory marker in the blood. As means, proactive measures must be taken before symptoms surface. Young men should be especially active when it is a family history of cardiovascular disease.

2nd Increase physical activity – Regular, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity helps prevent heart and blood vessel disease. The more vigorous the activity, the greater the benefits. A study was conducted a few years ago, where three groups of people, a regime of movement over a period of several months. A group has cardiovascular training for one hour, three times per week. The second group has resistance exercise for one hour, three times per week. The third group has a half-hour of cardiovascular and half an hour of resistance exercise, three times per week.

At the end of the study is the third group showed significantly superior results to the other two groups. They were not only better conditioned, but their body composition showed improvement. Moral of the story – a combination of cardiovascular exercises and resistance.

3rd Balance your diet – We've all heard “eat a balanced diet,” but not a good explanation of what a balanced diet is. The best way to eat a balanced diet is to maintain a separation of 40/40/20 protein, carbohydrates and fats, respectively. If you have an eating 1800 calories per day diet, you'd consume 720 calories of protein, 720 calories of carbohydrates and 360 calories from fat. Limit or eliminate fried foods. Add fruit and raw vegetables.

If you are really ambitious, you can use Jack LaLanne's philosophy. He juices fruit and vegetables several times a week. He eats a lot of fish. His philosophy is: “If man is, I did not eat it.” In other words, no refined foods.

4th Find an outlet for stress – My resignation has always worked with weights or cardiovascular exercise, like cycling. Physiologically, this releases endorphins (the feel good neurotransmitter). Choose an activity that is fun to you, otherwise you may quit. Examples: walking, jogging, cycling, tennis, racquetball, swimming, etc.

5th Eat Healthy Chocolate – Yes, you heard right. Dark chocolate has a group of compounds, called polyphenols, which are loaded with antioxidants. There is scientific evidence that these polyphenols can reverse and prevent heart disease, and help other inflammatory conditions as well. My family includes cardio-vascular diseases. The scientific evidence for dark chocolate was so convincing, I immediately it in my preventive regime.

Healthy chocolate is not chocolate you get in a Candy Bar, or in the grocery stores. The chocolate has been heated, alkalized, combined with sugar and fats. It is junk food, and its antioxidants have been destroyed in the heating process. True healthy chocolate from raw cocoa and is cold pressed to the polyphenols. Some people even lose weight with healthy chocolate, because the appetite suppressing effect.

Follow these five tips and remember the above risk factors. Change the ones you can, and do not worry about the ones you can not. If you are adamant about prevention, the rewards are obvious.

Foods That Lower Cholesterol – A Review of 7 Cholesterol-reducing Fruits

Got high cholesterol? You can try to lower cholesterol food to your diet before you on prescription medication. In this article we will look at seven fruits, which scientists have linked to lower cholesterol.

In the year 2004, with researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the results of a study which shows that the animal blueberries were effective in lowering cholesterol than the cholesterol drug ciprofibrate. All hamsters in the study were fed a high cholesterol diet, and one group received Blueberry skins and the other drug. The group had blueberry cholesterol levels 37 percent lower than the control group, while the ciprofibrate group cholesterol levels were 17 percent lower than the control group. The study authors attributed the cholesterol-lowering effect of a link in blueberries called pterostilbene, causing liver cells to activate a response that leads to lower cholesterol.

Apples

The old adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, applies in the case of a lowering of cholesterol. Apples contain a lot of pectin, which has been shown to lower LDL (bad)-cholesterol and has other advantages, including improvement of insulin resistance and to strengthen the immune system. An apple contains about 10 percent of the recommended daily fiber intake. Adequate fiber to lower cholesterol was of course, as the fiber helps clean cholesterol from the gastrointestinal tract.

An animal study at the University of Michigan and at the Experimental Biology 2008 meeting in San Diego found that tart cherries are among the foods that lower cholesterol. Rats, which fed tart cherry powder and a high-fat diet, the typical American diet, had cholesterol levels 11 percent lower than animals fed the same high-fat diet without the cherry powder. The group, with a tart cherry powder also lower blood sugar and less fat around the midsection. Researchers at the University of Michigan that they are planning a human process of measuring the benefits of the fruit. Tart cherries are different from sweet or bing cherries, which are usually eaten raw. Dried tart cherries can be found in supermarkets and are delicious.

Avocado

Even if it is a calorie-rich foods, avocado has been shown to lower cholesterol naturally in numerous studies. The research in Mexico, where 45 participants showed that after eating avocado daily for one week, the participants' total cholesterol fell 17 percent and their HDL (good cholesterol) by 11 percent. Avocados contain sitosterol, a nutrient that has shown that lower cholesterol in more than a dozen studies on humans.
